American Wedding

Universal - 2003
Rose Hills Foundation Conservatory for Botanical Science, Australian Garden, Brown Garden
Created a luxury wedding spot inside the (almost completed) Conservatory. The wedding took place in the east wing. The reception was in the center under the dome, with a lavish dance floor constructed over the central pit.

The only project ever to use the Conservatory in this way, as shortly afterwards the building was completed and filled with plants. (It is now the home of the "Stinky Plant", amorphophallus titanum).

American Wedding also filmed in the Brown Garden and in the Australian Garden (rehearsal brunch and the bus arrival).

Anger Management

Sony/Revolution - 2002
Japanese Garden, Lily Ponds
"Anger Management" spent nearly three weeks constructing a set for a Zen monastery on a meadow in the Lily Ponds. The gong structure from our Japanese Garden was copied directly, although the gong itself was made double the size of the real gong, and the wall and gate into the Zen Garden were recreated as part of the monastery entrance. The road in front of the actual Japanese Garden was covered in dirt to create the appearance of a country lane. The company spent four days filming, one at the actual Japanese Garden, where the car containing Jack Nicholson and Adam Sandler arrives (and, hurriedly, departs), and the other three, including a fight sequence with John C. Reilly, in the set by the Lily Ponds.

CSI

CBS - 2013
Huntington Gallery Loggia and East Lawn
The Loggia of the Huntington Gallery was dressed with couches, cushions and a large flat-screen TV to create the Lounge/Stage Area for a fancy mud-spring spa, and several scenes occur there, including a final confrontation between Russell (Ted Danson) and spa leader Alan Quinn (Matthew Del Negro). On the East Lawn, director Eagle Egilsson staged a particularly beautiful scene of Elisabetta (Catrinel Menghia Marlon) walking down to the mud-springs at night, between rows of lighted tiki torches. Although serious consideration was given to creating the mud-spring spa itself in the Lily Ponds, and the final set reflects this, ultimately it was built on stage.

E Ring

Warner Bros. - 2005
Huntington Gallery Interiors (Main Hall, Large Drawing Room), lawn east of Huntington Gallery, Garden Terrace/Entrance Area, Overseers' Room (inside)
One of only 3 projects to film inside the Huntington Gallery while it was closed for restoration (the other two were "Nip/Tuck" and "The Good German"). The Gallery portrayed the American Embassy in Madrid, the lawn was a park where a kidnapping and murder took place. The Garden Terrace and Overseers' Room were part of the University of Madrid. Since several scenes took place in the hall of the Huntington Gallery, the set dressing department brought in paintings to hang throughout, including a copy of "The Blue Boy" way down at the end which, unfortunately, never made it into the show.

Imagine That

Paramount - 2007
Entrance and parking lot

Intolerable Cruelty

Universal - 2002
Rose Garden, North Vista
"Intolerable Cruelty" filmed a wedding and reception during 2 brutally hot days in the middle of July. Catherine Zeta Jones married Billy Bob Thornton on the North Vista as George Clooney looked on. The reception (and the eating of the pre-nuptial agreement) took place in the Rose Garden.

Iron Man 2

Marvel - 2010
Munger Research Center, Japanese Garden, Erburu Gallery
The Huntington appears three times in "Iron Man 2" - but fairly subtly.

The final awards ceremony is the easiest to spot. It was filmed on the front steps of the Munger Research Center.

Less obvious is one of the final fight scenes, set in a Japanese Garden supposedly located under a dome at the Stark Expo. The garden is remarkably similar to ours- there's a moon bridge, and a canyon but the house is different and there's a large waterfall. The actual scene was not filmed here - but the garden was modeled directly after ours. They used a laser based measuring technology (called LIDAR) to photograph our Japanese Garden, then created their own computer generated location, infinitely more suitable for a high-tech explosive fight scene.

And finally (and so subtle it should win you points in any Iron Man trivia contest) -- at the beginning of the movie, there's a splashy first scene where Tony Stark is introduced, making a presentation at his Expo during a big stage show surrounded by dancing girls. As he leaves the stage, the scene cuts to a newscaster standing outside the building in front of happy crowds held back by barricades. That location was, in fact, the entrance to the Erburu Gallery, making its feature film debut.

Iron Man 3

Marvel - 2013
While "Iron Man 2" filmed its main Huntington scene on the steps of the Munger Research Center, "Iron Man 3" broke new ground by becoming the first project to film INSIDE the Munger.

The scenes are fairly subtle; in one, the Vice President (Miguel Ferrer) and his staff are in the White House Situation Room, watching the Mandarin's actions with horror. For this scene, large green screens were installed along the walls of the Huntington's President's Conference Room. Some additional furniture was added by the production company, but the massive central conference table is always there.

In the other scene, towards the very end of the movie, the VP is arrested and hustled away, as Rhodey (Don Cheadle) watches. The lobby and entrance area to the Huntington's president's office were lavishly decorated for Christmas, including an enormous two story tree.

A third shot was filmed outside on the lawn, where Rhodey, who is huddling near the wall of the Mandarin's mansion, watches the suit fly overhead - but it doesn't appear to be in the final film.

Legally Blonde 2

MGM - 2003
Mausoleum, Rose Garden
Actually here on 2 separate occasions. In December 2002, filmed the "Washington dog park" scenes at the Mausoleum. Returning in January of 2003, filmed wedding scenes in the Rose Garden, then moved back to the Mausoleum to film the happy couple driving off down tree lined East Mausoleum Dr. The wedding scene was notable because the company built a scaffolding stretching the length of the Herb Garden, on which they mounted air cannons shooting out freeze dried rose petals, which floated down over the departing guests.

Little Fockers

Universal - 2009-2010
Australian lawn, Rose Garden
Three scenes were filmed at The Huntington for "Little Fockers", but only two of them made it into the final movie.

The main scene is the over the top children's birthday party for Henry and Samantha Focker.

Prior to that, there is a scene where Kevin (Owen Wilson), explains his vision for the party, filmed on the Australian lawn before construction of the party set began.

The third scene, shot in the Rose Garden, was a nightmare wedding sequence where Greg (Ben Stiller) dreams he's marrying Jack (Robert DeNiro). Although it didn't make the final cut, it's included as the "Alternate Opening" in the Bonus DVD features.

From their first prep day in the Rose Garden to the final wrap day on the Australian lawn, "Little Fockers" was a presence at The Huntington for two and a half months, from 11/2/09 to 1/13/10. The party set was so extensive that it remained standing (bouncy castles deflated) even over the holidays. The company filmed here for a total of 20 days during those 2 1/2 months, with another 12 days taken up by set building, rehearsals, and the final strike.

Special tents were built in the west end of the Australian garden for the care and feeding of the nearly 200 background artists working at the party. Nearly half of them were children (requiring additional tents so they could put in their mandatory school hours).

An additional area was set aside to cater lunch for cast and crew, and the back gate to Euston Rd. was opened to accommodate the shuttle vehicles transporting everyone to their off-site parking at Santa Anita racetrack.

The scenes with Dustin Hoffman at the party were not shot here; those scenes were additional photography, filmed in the fall at the LA County Arboretum.

Mad Men

U.R.O.K. Productions, Inc. - 2009

Warner Bros. - 1973
Japanese Garden, North Vista
Robert Preston sings "Loving You" to Lucille Ball, a song written especially for the film to serve as a montage depicting their honeymoon. They stand on the moon bridge in the Japanese Garden (still painted red in those days) and they dance together around the North Vista fountain. Nancy Drew

Warner Bros. - 2006
Japanese Garden, North Vista, front of Boone Galley
Our presence in this film is extremely subtle; The Huntington was the location for the filmclips featuring the doomed starlet Dehlia Draycott, which show up as clues in the movie. Note that the Chinese puzzle box scene was NOT filmed in the Chinese Garden, which did not yet exist; it was shot at the gateway to the Japanese Garden.

National Treasure 2

Disney - 2007
Rose Garden lawn
The Easter egg roll on the White House lawn. At that time, the Huntington Gallery was under restoration; NT2 built an enormous blue screen that completely replaced the construction fence on that side of the Gallery, and put the White House there.

NCIS

CBS - 2014
Mausoleum, President's Reception Area and the Cage Hallway in the Munger Research Center, then Back-woods, Australian lawn, and President's Office
In an episode entitled "Kill The Messenger", the Mausoleum served as the background for the discovery of a body in the vicinity of the Ellipse, in Washington, D.C. Later, the lobby of the President's office served as the reception area for the bad guy's office. And the denouement occurred in a dark and spooky hallway that has never been filmed before, supposedly the basement of that same building. In fact, it IS in the same building, but it's not a basement; it's a corridor between two large, cage-like rooms that hold some of the art objects and library materials that have just arrived and are waiting to be processed.

"Kill The Messenger" filmed in late July, 2014. In December, NCIS returned to film "We Build, We Fight", starting at a construction site up in the woods above the Chinese Garden, then moving to the Australian lawn (playing the part of Arlington National Cemetery). They completed their day inside the President's office, which had been re-decorated to serve as a Navy Rear Admiral's office.

The North Vista is the finish line; the various teams dump their treasures there. Vehicular mayhem ensues, cars screech through the Euston Gate and up Library Rd, a yellow Checker cab crashes into an oak tree. The star-studded comedy is a remarkable piece of film history, and The Huntington gets a lot of screen time.

Switched At Birth

Prodco Inc./ABC Freeform - 2016
Jungle Garden, Lily Ponds, Chinese Garden
Although this ABC Freeform show filmed in January of 2016, the episode, "The Call", didn't air for over a year, when it became the premiere episode of the fifth and final season. Three scenes were shot here over a very long and occasionally rainy Tuesday; they all appear towards the beginning of the episode. The teaser finds Daphne (Katie Leclerc) and Bay (Vanessa Marano), the two leads, stumbling lost through the jungle (Jungle Garden) and into a "Chinese village", where they enter a hut the production constructed in the Lily Ponds. There is a night party sequence, filmed in the Plantain Court and Teahouse in the Chinese Garden, and an additional Lily Ponds scene, where the girls wait to meet Bay's boyfriend Travis (Ryan Lane), who arrives on a motorscooter. (The scene as originally written specified a rural bus, but the constraints of time and logistics resulted in using the scooter instead, which allowed them to wind picturesquely through a bamboo path to arrive on the scene.)

A Cambodian village, complete with goats and chickens, was built near the Lily Ponds; it appeared in the finished film as video inserts. The Good German

Warner Bros. - 2005
Huntington Gallery Interiors (Large Drawing Room, Dining Room, Main Hall), HUG Circle
In the fall of 2005, the Huntington Gallery was closed to the public and the art objects were removed so restoration of the building could begin. In the brief window of time between closure of the gallery and the beginning of construction, three productions were permitted to film inside the gallery - something which had always been completely impossible when the building was still open and full of artworks.

"The Good German" was the first and only feature (the other two productions were episodes of the TV series "Nip/Tuck" and "E-Ring").

The large drawing room, the dining room and the main hallway were transformed into rooms in a German mansion, post World War II; a party and several discussion scenes took place between George Clooney, Beau Bridges, Leland Orser and others. Some scenes were also shot in front of the building.

The Good Place

Universal TV - 2016
Australian lawn, Celebration lawn, Children's, Chinese, North Vista, Palm Gardens and Scott Loggia
This NBC TV show starring Kristen Bell and Ted Danson filmed several scenes for the pilot and episode #103 at multiple locations throughout the property in the spring of 2016. They've returned several times for scenes in various parts of "Heaven." They're experts in efficiently moving from location to location, and often manage to work in four different gardens in the same day; to date they've filmed in nearly every garden.

For the pilot, March 2016: North Vista: The principal characters meet, discuss their respective houses and an upcoming party. Scott Loggia: Eleanor asks Michael who he is. Lily Ponds: Michael and Eleanor walk towards Ombu Circle, he lists people who are NOT in the Good Place. Australian Garden: Eleanor's point of view of the interior of a refugee tent AND 2 other scenes -- Michael shows Eleanor her new home, and the Good Place goes haywire, with everything in disarray (think giant ladybugs on the big lawn).

Episode #103, May 2016: Children's Garden: Tahani recruits Eleanor to be Michael's assistant; Chinese Garden: Cualli's house AND Eleanor tries to find out bad things about Tahani; Celebration lawn (EVC): Tahani tells how she died; Palm Garden: Michael offers Chidi a cartographer job.

Season 2, Ep # 201-2, April 2017: North Vista: Tahani and Tomas walk and talk; in a separate scene, Jason and his "soul-mate" Luang ride bikes through HUG Circle. Chinese Garden: Tahani meets Tomas at the restaurant. Michael and Jason walk and talk on the bridge, Jason's dance crew inspires Michael. Lily Ponds: A large yurt was built here, for several scenes involving Michael, Jason, and Luang. Desert Garden: A small sand and gravel garden was built here on a path; Jason uses rocks to spell out "boobs." AND a scene was shot with Eleanor holding a bunch of balloons in the middle of the barrel cactus that became the key art for Season 2.

Episode #208, June 2017: Several romantic scenes with Tahani and Jason in the Lily Ponds and on the Australian lawn, including a proper croquet game (Tahani's idea) and a croquet game using a tower of champagne glasses as a target (Jason's idea).
